June 2002 - Athabasca University is delighted to announce that Shirlee Smith Matheson is the recipient of their 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award.

The selection was made from a field of nominees who were all very deserving of the award. The committee's decision was based on Shirlee's outstanding contribution to Canadian literature—in particular, the literature of Western Canada and children's literature. Also of merit is her dedication and enthusiasm for instilling a love of reading in children across Canada and around the world. Finally, they were impressed with Shirlee's pride in her Athabasca University degree and her demonstrated role as an ambassador for the University.

An official award presentation by Athabasca University took place March 19, 2003 in Calgary.
